Watering Guide

Watering your grass doesn’t have to be complicated, but it’s common to wonder: How much should I water? What’s the best time of day? And does it change depending on the season or type of grass?

Here are some simple watering guidelines for turf grasses in the Dallas, TX and surrounding areas. Keep in mind that local conditions can affect your schedule, so always be ready to adjust.

How do we work

Best Time to Water:
Set your sprinkler system to run between
5 AM and 10 AM for optimal results.

Important: For strong, healthy roots, it’s best to water deeply and thoroughly rather than watering more frequently.

Spring Watering

As we transition into Spring, our lawns wake up from winter dormancy and require less water than during the summer months.

Recommended watering schedule for Spring:

  • Zone Sprinkler Systems: Once a week
  • Spray Sprinkler Heads: 12 minutes per week
  • Rotary Sprinkler Heads: 26 minutes per week
  • Landscaping & Drip Line Underground Watering: 20 minutes per week

During Spring, as temperatures climb into the 70-80°F range, evaporation begins to occur between 10 AM and 6 PM.

For Bermudagrass, St. Augustine & Zoysiagrass:

  • Frequency: 1 time a week
  • Pop-up heads: 12 minutes per zone
  • Rotary heads: 26 minutes per zone

Summer Watering

In the hot summer months, watering every day may seem tempting but isn’t the best solution. Watering too often can be inefficient. Aim to conserve water while keeping your lawn beautiful.

Summer watering guide:

For Bermudagrass:

  • Frequency: 2 times a week
  • Pop-up heads: 15 minutes per zone
  • Rotary heads: 30-34 minutes per zone

For St. Augustine & Zoysiagrass:

  • Frequency: 2 times a week
  • Pop-up heads: 15 minutes per zone
  • Rotary heads: 30 minutes per zone

Fall Watering

Although temperatures start to drop in Fall, watering is still essential. However, too much water can be just as harmful as too little. Adjust your watering schedule early to prevent over-watering.

Fall watering guide:

For Bermudagrass:

  • Frequency: 2 times a week
  • Pop-up heads: 12 minutes per zone
  • Rotary heads: 26 minutes per zone

For St. Augustine & Zoysiagrass:

  • Frequency: 2 times a week
  • Pop-up heads: 12 minutes per zone
  • Rotary heads: 26 minutes per zone
